Hydrogen-rich water has no effect on blood pressure of hypertensive rats but can lessen kidney injury. Hydrogen-rich water can reduce generation of active hydrogen, up-regulate SOD, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione -S- epoxide transferase and catalase activity, and suppress NADPH oxidase activity. Hydrogen-rich water can suppress expression of proinflammatory cytokine including TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and macrophage chemotactic factor 1. Hydrogen-rich water can also protect mitochondria function including formation of adenosine triphosphate and membrane integrity.
